South Kentucky RECC People Fund Awards Grants
South Kentucky RECC has awarded more People Fund grants. The People Fund was started in 2004 to financially help meet community needs not met by other agencies or resources.

To date, approximately 3,000 members are participating in The People Fund, which allows South Kentucky RECC members to “round up” their electric bills to the nearest dollar, with an average of 50 cents per participating member being contributed each month to the program.

The latest recipients of grants from The People Fund are McCreary Christian Center, Whitley City, Russell County Public Library, Jamestown, God’s Food Pantry of Russell County, Russell Springs, Girl Scout Troop 1054, Albany, Clinton County High Youth Services Center, Albany, Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Jamestown, the Center for Rural Development, Somerset, and Pulaski Elementary Corral, Somerset. This brings the total amounts of grants distributed to date to $17,000.

McCreary Christian Center is using the grant money to purchase food for its food pantry. Currently, approximately 400 families are using the food pantry each month.

The People Fund grant given to the Russell County Public Library will be used to purchase shelving or bookcases for its sale room at the Russell Springs branch.

God’s Food Pantry of Russell County is using the funding to purchase food for the pantry.

Grant money for Girl Scout Troop 1054 of Albany will be used to help provide for each child of the troop to be able to attend an out-of-state camping trip.

Clinton County High School’s Youth Services Center will use the People Fund grant money to provide educational support for the students. Money will be used to purchase such things as notebooks, pens, pencils, etc.

The grant awarded to Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Jamestown, will help purchase educational materials for the new Visitor/ Environmental Education Center at the Hatchery.

The Center for Rural Development in Somerset will be using their grant funding to develop curriculum materials to distribute as part of the Center’s new youth entrepreneurship program.

The People Fund grant for Pulaski Elementary Corral, Somerset, the school’s new summer child care program, will be used to take participating students on educational fieldtrips to places like the Louisville Zoo, Lexington Children’s Museum, etc.

Alan Coffey, member services and marketing team leader for South Kentucky RECC, says anyone interested in participating in The People Fund and rounding up their bill can get an application from their local co-op office or by calling their local office. Any organization that wishes to apply for a grant can get an application on the SKRECC Web site.
