South Kentucky RECC Encourages Spring Safety

The weather is warmer, and people’s thoughts turn outdoors to yard work. South Kentucky RECC is urging people to be safe while working around the yard this spring.

South Kentucky RECC members who are property owners should first contact the co-op if they are considering tree trimming or removal near power lines. South Kentucky RECC will trim the trees for you if they are beneath the power lines or will assist you in cutting them down.

Never use metal or wooden ladders near power lines. Should they accidentally get into the lines, the person on them or touching them can be fatally injured.

Be extremely careful using long-handled tools, such as pruning tools. If the tool gets too close to a power line, the electricity may arc to the tool.

Do not throw anything over overhead lines, or try to retrieve anything hanging from power lines.

Before doing painting or other maintenance work near the service connection to a building, contact South Kentucky RECC and ask for assistance.

South Kentucky RECC also urges members to talk to their children about power line safety. Explain to them that they should always look up before climbing trees to see if there are power lines running through them, and make sure they understand that they should never fly kites near power lines. Remind them that if they see a downed power line they should tell an adult who can call the Co-op to report it.
